---------------------------------------------------
Get Your Iridium Fix Before It’s Too Late!

The shock and dazzle of Iridium flares will soon be a thing of the past.
Here's how to make the most of seeing them before a new generation of spacecraft
replaces the Iridium satellites.

Each of the approximately 66 Iridiums in orbit have three door-sized
aluminum antennae treated with highly reflective, silver-coated Teflon for
temperature control.

When the angle between observer and satellite is just right, sunlight
reflecting off an antenna can cause the satellite to surge from invisibility up to
magnitude –8.5 in a matter of seconds. If you've never seen one, the searing
brilliance may make you recoil instinctively. On rare occasions, flares can
reach magnitude –9.5. That's 100 times brighter than Venus!

Sadly, that era will soon draw to a close. On January 14th, SpaceX’s
Falcon 9
delivered the first 10 of a new generation of Iridium NEXT satellites to
low-
Earth orbit, starting the process to replace the older units in a maneuver
called slot-swapping. While the new birds will provide faster data rates and
enhanced global communications, their antenna design is completely
different and not expected to produce significant flares.

Heavens Above is one of the easiest sites to get you looking in the
right place at the right time. The Heavens Above website allows for easy figuring and
finding of Iridium flares.

Just sign in and give it your location, then click the Iridium Flares
link under the Satellites heading on the left side of the homepage. A table will
pop open with a week's worth of passes that includes pertinent information like
brightness, altitude, and magnitude of the flare at flare center, the
brightest possible magnitude for a particular pass. Clicking on the date will
produce a map showing the flare's path and ground track where the flare will appear
brightest. When that path passes near or over your location, you'll see a –8
dazzler. If not, you can use the map to drive to the sweet spot and
await the display.

The transition to the Iridium NEXT generation will be gradual but
certain, so make the most of the opportunities that remain. If you're a teacher, do your
homework and plan an outing to show a daytime flare to your science class.
Anything that gets people talking more about the sky is a good thing, and I
guarantee those kids will never forget the sight.

Lunar Amateur Radio Satellites DSLWP-A1/A2

Mingchuan Wei BG2BHC reports DSLWP is a lunar formation flying
mission for low frequency radio astronomy, amateur radio and
education, consists of 2 microsatellites.

Developed by students at the Harbin Institute of Technology the
amateur radio payload onboard DSLWP-A1 will provide telecommand
uplink and telemetry / digital image downlink. An open telecommand is
also designed to allow amateurs to send commands to take and download
an image.

The satellites are 50x50x40 cm with a mass of about 45 kg and are 3-
axis stabilized. Two linear polarization antennas are mounted along
and normal to the flight direction.

The team proposes downlinks for A1 on 435.425 MHz and 436.425 MHz

Upcoming Contacts

*  A direct contact via BNØSH with students at Sacred Heart Primary School,
New Taipei City, Taiwan, R.O.C, is scheduled for Tue 2016-08-02 08:36:03
UTC.
The scheduled astronaut is Takuya Onishi, KF5LKS.

The Sacred Heart Primary School in Taiwan was founded in 1965 and is part
of the world family of Sacred Heart Schools which can be found on five
continents. Its philosophy of education is rooted in the development of the
whole person. This founding vision was that of a great educator- Madeleine
Sophie Barat - who lived at the time of the French Revolution. In her
day, as
in ours, the social fabric was disintegrating. Her response was to try to
rebuild and transform society through an education based on solid
intellectual
training and spiritual values leading to the development of the whole
person.

Sacred Heart Education
People in East Asia are, to a large extent, shaped by Confucianism, whose
tradition stresses respect for teachers and family. Our teachers are
provided
with regular in service training to enable them to meet the unique
challenges
of personal and social responsibility, posed by the influence of modern
technology and the Western stress on individualism, which are rapidly
changing
our world. At the same time, they learn to nurture a global awareness and
concern in their students.
Sacred Heart School strives to give students a well-rounded education, based
on the conviction that each person has talents and capacities which can
contribute to the betterment of society. We believe that school is the place
for students to both acquire a love of learning and experience hope, joy and
fullness of life.
We are convinced that true human development is based on faith in God's love
for each person.Youngsters of various religious beliefs are welcome.
Faith is
integrated with life and students are offered an education which teaches
personal values and emphasizes mutual respect among all people. At the same
time, a deep appreciation for intellectual values is cultivated, allowing
students to be knowledgeable, questioning, and reflective.
Our students are taught to be persons capable of being both independent and
able to work with others; of having a compassionate heart ? especially
for the
marginalized of society and of experiencing joy in service and in living for
others. Creativity is encouraged in the teaching of all subjects so that the
students can develop their own vision and learn to live with commitments.

Profile
At present the school has 781 students from 7 to 12 years of age. The campus
is ideally situated in the suburbs, at the foot of the Goddess of Mercy
Mountain, with the Tamsui River in the foreground. School buildings are
surrounded by spacious gardens with abundant flowers, birds and trees. We
believe that both dedicated educators and a healthy environment are
essential
to quality education which will influence the students for life..

Beijing Launches Three More Amateur Radio Satellites

On September 25, 2015 at 01:41 UT Beijing launched three satellites with
amateur radio payloads from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (JSLC)
in the
Gobi desert, Inner Mongolia. They were carried on a new launcher, Beijing’s
first solid-fuel rocket Chang Zheng 11 (CZ-11), and deployed in a 470 x
485 km,
97.3 degree inclination Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).

This launch occurred just over 5 days after nine satellites carrying amateur
radio payloads were launched by Beijing from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch
Center (TSLC) in Shanxi on September 19 at 23:01 UT.

The satellites were developed by students at the Nanjing University of
Aeronautics and Astronautics in collaboration with the Shanghai Engineering
Center for Microsatellites (SECM).

The main goal of the mission is to experiment with Software Defined Radio
(SDR) in space. The amateur radio payloads will be used for exchanging
Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) information with the amateur radio
ground control station. Information about the telemetry will be made
publicly
available so that radio amateurs around the world may track and monitor the
health of the satellites.

Other payloads include a video camera along with receivers for dual-band
GPS/Beidou, Maritime Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Aeronautical
Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B).

Using MEMS based cold-gas micropropulsion it is planned to demonstrate
formation flying by two of the CubeSats along with inter satellite
communication using GAMALINK 2.4 GHz spread spectrum at 1 Mbps and the
CubeSat
Space Protocol (CSP).

The TW-1A and TW-1B CubeSats are 2U (20x10x10cm) in size while TW-1C is 3U
(30x10x10cm).

Michael Chen BD5RV reports the satellites have these downlinks in the
435-438
MHz ITU Amateur Satellite Service allocation:
• Tianwang-1A (TW-1A / SECM): Camera, 435.645 MHz GMSK 4800/9600 CSP TX
interval 10s
• Tianwang-1B (TW-1B / NJUST-2): AIS, 437.645 MHz GMSK 4800/9600 CSP TX
interval 20s
• Tianwang-1C (TC-1C / NJFA-1): ADS-B, 435.645 MHz GMSK 4800/9600 CSP TX
interval 10s
Note: TW-1A and 1C use the same frequency.

On the same launch was the technology demonstration satellite Pujian-1 which
has WiFi for intra-satellite communications.

Object identification from information supplied by Nico Janssen PA0DLO and
Zhang Xuan BH4DBE:
TW-1A object 40928, 2015-051B

ARISS SSTV Images to Commmemorate 40th Anniversary of the Apollo-
Soyuz Mission

40 years ago this week, the historic joint Apollo-Soyuz mission was
conducted.   Apollo-Soyuz (or Soyuz-Apollo in Russia) represented the
first joint USA-Soviet mission and set the stage for follow-on Russia-
USA space collaboration on the Space Shuttle, Mir Space Station and
the International Space Station.  The Soyuz and Apollo vehicles were
docked from July 17-19, 1975, during which time joint experiments and
activities were accomplished with the 3 USA astronauts and 2 Soviet
Cosmonauts on-board.  Apollo-Soyuz was the final mission of the
Apollo program and the last USA human spaceflight mission until the
first space shuttle mission in 1981.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of this historic international
event, the ARISS team has developed a series of 12 Slow Scan
Television (SSTV) images that will be sent down for reception by
schools, educational organizations and ham radio operators,
worldwide.  The SSTV images are planned to start sometime Saturday
morning, July 18 and run through Sunday July 19.  These dates are
tentative and are subject to change.  The SSTV images can be received
on 145.80 MHz and displayed using several different SSTV computer
programs that are available on the internet.

We encourage you to submit your best received SSTV images to:

http://spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/submit.php

The ARISS SSTV image gallery will post the best SSTV images received
from this event at:

http://spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/index.php

Also, as a special treat, on Saturday July 18 the ISS Cosmonauts
will take time out to conduct an ARISS contact with students
attending the Moon Day/Frontiers of Flight Museum event in Dallas
Texas.  This Russian Cosmonaut-USA Student contact is planned to
start around 16:55 UTC through the W6SRJ ground station located in
Santa Rosa, California.  ARISS will use the 145.80 MHz voice
frequency downlink (same as the SSTV downlink) for the Moon Day
contact.

For more information on ARISS, please go to our web site:
www.ariss.org

The ARISS international team would like to thank our ARISS-Russia
colleague, Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, for his leadership on this
historic commemoration.

APRS SSID

http://www.y027.com/dvbbs8/dispbbs.asp?boardid=5&Id=829

http://cq.hub.tw/aprs/avrt5

ps.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=831693976848974&set=pcb.697437296959943&type=1&theater

E-mail list
An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at S. K. Seri Suria, Bangsar, Selangor, Malaysia on 09 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:31 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and 9M2RPN. The contact should be audible over Malaysia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.

Our first ARISS contact was made in 2007 when, Malaysia's first Astronaut Shiekh Muzapher went on board ISS.  We made 5 direct contacts when, some 80 school children to talked to him and asked questions.  Since then it has become highly sought after yearly event which is tied up with the Prime Minister's Space Challenge Trophy.  This year 2013 we would be making our 8th yearly contact. Since the schools do not have ground stations, they make use of Satellite Ground Station at National Planetarium established in 1995 under the call sign of 9M2RPN. The schools are the nurseries to produce future astronauts and space scientists.  The forthcoming contact in October, 2013 provides the hands on experience and the seeding operation for tomorrow's space scientists.

Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:

1.  How far do you have to go to escape gravity?

2.  What is the escape velocity to reach ISS?

3.  When you have achieved orbit what is the first thing that you do?

4.  Is it hard to eat in space?

5.  How does it feel to float in space?

6.  How does one get treated in case of sudden sickness in space?

7.  If there is air leak in ISS what emergency action would be taken?

8.  Can you weigh yourself in weightlessness?

9.  Do you sweat in space?

10. Can you grow seeds in space?

11. Can you see other satellites from the ISS?

12. What time zone do you observe in space?

13. How many sun rises and sun sets you see in space?

14. How often you get to speak to your families in space?

15. How is garbage disposed in space?

16. How do astronauts train for launch, orbit and reentry?

17. How would a candle burn in space?

18. Can you blow your nose in space?

19. If you sneeze in space do you float backwards?

20. Can you see stars in daytime when you are in space?

US Space Fence Shut Down

It is reported on SatWatch that the 216 MHz US Space Fence, used to
detect orbital objects, was turned off on September 1, 2013 at 0000
UT.

The Air Force Space Surveillance System (AFSSS), known as the Space
Fence, is a U.S. government multistatic radar system built to detect
orbital objects passing over the United States. There are three
transmitter sites operating on 216.983, 216.97 and 216.99 MHz and six
receiving stations.

According to Wiki the system is understood to be capable of
detecting a 10 cm object at an altitude of 30,000 km and makes 5
million satellite observations each month.

Early in August Space News reported that: Gen. William Shelton,
commander of Air Force Space Command, “has directed that the Air
Force Space Surveillance System be closed and all sites vacated”
effective Oct. 1, the memo said.

It seems appear the closure may have occurred earlier than initially
reported.

The reason for the shutdown has been reported as being because
Federal Government expenditure is exceeding budget resulting in
automatic budget cuts known as sequestration, however, a Space Review
article suggests another reason
http://www.thespacereview.com/article/2357/1

Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) officials say they have devised
modified operating modes for the Perimeter Acquisition Radar
Characterization System at Cavalier Air Force Station, N.D., and for
the space surveillance radar at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., which
allows the discontinuation of AFSSS operations while still
maintaining solid space situational awareness.
